Hidden Secret Service Menu in Dish TV DTH Set Top Box

Hidden Secret Service Menu in Dish TV DTH Set Top Box

There are many DTH (Direct-To-Home) television service providers in India such as Tata Sky, Dish TV, Airtel Digital TV, Reliance Big TV, Videocon D2H, Sun Direct, etc and Tata Sky and Dish TV are the most popular brands among them.
In past we have shared a secret trick to access hidden service menu in Tata Sky and Airtel Digital TV Set Top Box which allows you to setup LNB, format hard disk, perform master reset and much more:
Revealing Hidden Secret Service Menu in Tata Sky and Airtel Digital TV DTH Set Top Box
Today its turn of Dish TV. Last week my cousin sister got a new Dish TV connection. It was an HD+ connection i.e. the set top box provides a few HD (high-definition) channels and also allows to pause, rewind, record live TV channels.
When the service guys finished installation of dish antenna, she asked me to check the quality of new connection and adjust various built-in settings. When I was looking into menus, I found an interesting menu "Utility" present in STB Info -> Setup section. When I tried to open the menu, it asked for a password.
I tried various password combinations such as 0000, 1234, 12345, 123456, 1111, etc but none of them worked. I was not able to access the Utility menu. I contacted Dish TV customer care and asked them about the password but as usual they had no idea about it. Then I contacted one of my friends who works in Dish TV and he told me the correct password. When I entered the password, I was able to access a hidden secret service menu in Dish TV set top box which was quite similar to Tata Sky service menu.
So today in this article, I'm going to tell you the correct password of Utility menu present in Dish TV set top box settings which will help you in accessing a secret service menu.
I'll also tell you a secret trick to change home transponder frequency of Dish TV to watch FTA (Free-To-Air) channels or to use Dish TV in places where you don't receive NSS-6 satellite signals.
If you are a Dish TV user, you'll definitely love it.

1. Open Dish TV settings and go to Help tab. Now open STB Info option as shown in following image:

 2. It'll open a new page where some information is shown related to Dish TV STB. Now press Red button on your remote to enter into STB Setup screen.

 3. It'll open "Installation Main Menu" screen where you'll find various menus such as Home frequency, LNB Setup, Forced software upgrade, Restore factory settings, etc.
3.A. To Change Dish TV Home Transponder (TP) Frequency:

Select "Home Frequency" option and it'll show a list of all Dish TV TPs. By default Dish TV doesn't allow you to modify transponder values but there is a hidden secret code to edit TP settings. Select any TP using the up/down buttons and press 9523 buttons on your remote quickly. It'll open a secret screen which will allow you to enter new values for the transponder. You can enter any desired frequency and other TP details for example you can enter DD Direct+ (aka Free Dish) TP details to watch its FTA channels. Once you enter correct parameters, you should get good signal quality and strength for that TP. Save the changes and exit from the screen. Dish TV STB will restart and now you can perform channel search. It'll add all channels available on your selected transponder. Before modifying transponder values, make sure to write down old default values so that you can restore them later.

3.B. To Access Hidden Secret "Utility" Menu:

Among all options present in "Installation Main Menu" screen, you'll find Utility option present at 7th position. Try to open it and it'll ask for password. The correct password of Utility menu is 86427531. Enter the password and now you'll be able to open Utility menu.
 Utility menu contains following 2 options:
  • Download
  • Format Hard disk
I have no idea what the "Download" option does. It might be possible that this option was put to download and install latest firmware of Dish TV set top box but I'm not sure.
"Format Hard disk" option will format the USB device attached to set top box which is used to record TV programs.
Please keep in mind that both these options don't ask for confirmation. If you select any option, it'll immediately start performing its action. So think twice before selecting any option.

That's it. If you are a Dish TV DTH subscriber, feel free to test the password and service menu and share your feedback in your comment...

Inside Amiko Alien2 / Spark 7162 STB

Inside Amiko Alien2 / Spark 7162 STB
For those who do not want to take the cover off their Alien2, here is a look at the insides. It is a Fulan designed 7162. Unlike what a ROBber here or there might try and claim, all 7162's run this same exact hardware at the same speed and configuration. In Europe a 3rd DVB-C/T tuner is available. This has absolutely no function in North America since we do not have any DVB-C cable or DVB-T OTA. We figured that we should leave the worthless 3rd tuner out. It keeps the cost a little lower plus it is one less thing to produce heat or cause a failure.

These are often referred to as Spark 7111 (Alien) and Spark 7162 (Alien2). Spark is from the operating system and the number is the STi chip used.

All models (single, twin and triple) have dedicated mainboards for their line since tuners and demod chips are onboard.

The only real differences in hardware with 7162 STB's is cosmetic. These can be fitted with different front panels with different switch layouts. They don't even need or all have the fancy display like Alien2.

The significant differences between the different brands are in support and service. Before going with Amiko in late 2011 we investigated several different companies with similar hardware offerings. Karmacom was the only one that could deliver support for the NA market, does substantial development of their 7111/7162's in house and stands behind them. They are also the only ones that have NA Spark Online images and have firmware improvements and fixes for NA in their STB's only.

Here is a brief explanation of the hardware layout:

The big board on the left is the heavy duty power supply. It is bigger than most internal STB power supplies since it delivers 500mA max to both tuners (and the DVB-C/T in Europe) plus the STi7162 requires a bit more power than the less capable STB's.

To the lower right is the cardreader. There is a second one below it. These largely have no use in North America but come standard.

Above the readers you will notice 2 square chips on the mainboard. These are the demod chips. Above them are the twin DVB-S2 tuners. The third tuner would go to the left of them in Europe.

The vertical board is where Ethernet and the rear USB are attached.

The processor is quite sizeable for a STB and is below the big silver heatsink and retainer clip.

SPARK Web TV Distribution

Spark now supports channel groups & server side files for WebTV. This allows users and distributors to provide WebTV channel lists in categories and to automatically update channel names, URLs and picons. Multiple servers are supported for different WebTV deployments. The end result is a very nice and very clean looking system.

System Setup –
1. WebTV Server file. This is similar to a normal WebTV file, contains the groups/categories tells the STB where to look for the other WebTV files containing the channels.

2. WebTV channel files. These are normal WebTV files located on a server.

3. Web server for file distribution. STB Setup –
1. Spark 7111 or 7162 STB.

Designing the WebTV Server File

Although similar to a normal WebTV file, the server file supports new variables. Let’s look at example code.

Code:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<webtvs>
<webtv title="AMIKO AMERICAS GENERAL CHANNELS" urlkey="0"
url="http://www.yourwebserver.com/general/webtv_usr.xml"
description="General channels grouping." iconsrc="/root/plugin/webtv/icon/generalpicon.png"
group="0" type="0" server="1" />
<webtv title="LIVE EVENTS" urlkey="0"
url="http://www.yourwebserver.com/events/webtv_usr.xml"
description="Live sports, concerts and other events." iconsrc="/root/plugin/webtv/icon/eventpicon.png"
group="0" type="0" server="1" />
</webtvs>

Variables
webtv title= This is the display name in the list.

urlkey= This is for encryption support, leave it as-is

url= This is the location of your server side webtv_usr.xml for the category

iconsrc= Path to the group picon on the user’s STB. This is optional. If not used leave as iconscr=”” More will be explained for this variable below.

group= Leave as-is

type= Leave as-is

server= This needs to be set as “1” per the example. This tells Spark that the entry is a group rather than a live channel URL.

Once you have built your WebTV server/group file save as “webtv_usr.xml” and install to 7111/7162. This is the file you give to your end users. What we did with ours was to start with a bunch of categories, even if we are not using them. This way the 7111/7162 owners only need to load one file one time and automatically get updates without ever having to load update files.

The WebTV Channel File

As previously noted these are just normal WebTV files and are located on your webserver. Here is the structure we use for simplicity.

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<webtvs>

<webtv title="FRANCE 24 ENGLISH"
urlkey="0"
url="http://somestream.com:16482"
description="24 hour news channel from France."
iconsrc="/root/spark/AppRes/pic/webtv/napicon/france24_english.png" type="0" />

<webtv title="RUSSIA TODAY"
urlkey="0"
url="rtmp://someserver.net/rt:25555"
description="RT English news channel."
iconsrc="/root/spark/AppRes/pic/webtv/napicon/rt_america.png" type="0" />

</webtvs>

Variables
webtv title= This is the display name of the individual channel in the list.

urlkey= This is for encryption support, leave it as-is

url= This is the direct link for the stream. It cannot be the page URL, player URL or anything else.

iconsrc= Path to the group picon on the user’s STB. This is optional. If not used leave as iconscr=””

type= Options are “0” for a live stream, “1” for a static file like a MP4 or FLV.

When you have completed the WebTV channel files, upload them to the locations on your server that you specified in your WebTV server file. Be careful that the locations are correct for each file or the user will get a fail message when trying to view the channel lists.

Picons
It seems that several people have had issues making this work. It is very easy to do. Since some people are confused on making this work here is an overview. Please note that the picons are optional. If they are not specified, Spark will display the default webtv_h.png picon from within Spark.

Each picon should be around 60x40. We use 59x40 because for some reason they scaled better. Save each picon in .png format with a unique name.

For every channel or group where you want to use a picon you need to specify its location on the STB with the iconsrc variable. Since we are a distributor and produce customized Spark updates we put these within the updates starting with Spark 1.2.70. For end users and dealers this is not practical to do so there is a different recommended location. It is already included in Spark:

Code:
/root/plugin/webtv/icon/

FTP all your picons to this folder. For distribution there is a better way outlined below.

Distribution
Once you have designed your files and placed the appropriate ones on your server you’ll need to distribute your WebTV server file to your users. If you are not using the picon feature this is very easy, simply give them the webtv_usr.xml file with the servers/groups in it.

If you want to use picons for a nice looking distribution and make it easy to install, distribute as a “plugin”. No special skills for the distributor or end user are required to make this work.
1. Create a folder called “plugin”. NOT “Plugin” ; “plugins” or anything else, it must be exactly “plugin”.

2. Place the entire contents of the WebTV system into this folder. This would include your WebTV server file and the icon folder, exactly like is it setup within the Spark system. The required contents are located at:

Code:
/root/plugin/webtv/

3. ZIP up this package and give to your users.

4. The will unzip this and place the “plugin” folder on the ROOT of a USB flash drive. When plugged into 7111/7162 Spark will see this folder and prompt to upgrade the plugin. When done, Spark reboots with the WebTV file and picons installed.
